Pinene is a terpene that can be found in pine needles, turpentine, orange peels, dill, basil, rosemary and of course… cannabis!

The smell/flavor it produces is… drumroll… pine! The flavor is pleasantly earthy. Whenever I smoke a pine flavored strain, I’ll close my eyes and feel like I am a woodland fairy in the middle of an enchanted forest.

Pinene was originally developed as a defense mechanism to ward off predators, but also can attract pollinators. Over time, the compounds of this terpene have been found to have various benefits for human consumption.

Pinene’s Benefits

Terpenes, like cannabinoids, all come with their unique combination of benefits. And when combined with cannabinoids, all the benefits of both the terpenes and cannabinoids work together synergistically, creating an optimization of all benefits. This is known as the entourage effect.

Pinene’s known benefits include: promotes alertness, anti-inflammatory, boosts memory (can counter short term memory loss from THC). According to research, pinene’s anti-inflammatory properties can help ease symptoms of osteoarthritis. It also acts as a bronchodilator in which it can help ease the symptoms of asthma and protect the body from viruses such as bronchitis.

Strains that Contain Pinene

Pinene gives off a strong aroma, so once you recognize it’s particular scent, it’s easy to use your nose to figure out which cannabis strains contains it.

Some of these strains include Jack Herer, Dutch Treat, Blue Dream, Romulan, Strawberry Cough, OG Kush, and Island Sweet Skunk.

What other Products contain Pinene?

There are also CBD isolate products that include terpenes, but no THC. If you are someone who likes to dab their dose of CBD, for example, some companies make CBD isolates with added terpenes, known as terpsolate. You can get the benefits of CBD and terpenes without the high!

It’s also important to know there are differences in how terpenes are added to products. Be sure to look for products that include terpenes that are derived from plants. If you live in a state where cannabis is still not fully legalized, chances are the products you are buying don’t have terpenes that are derived from cannabis itself. Do not worry, as long as the source of the terpenes come from a natural and reliable source, they should be safe and effective regardless.
